Where we work.

St Margaret's at Cliffe and St Margaret's Bay on the clifftop, out to Kingsdown and Ringwould along the coast, Walmer and Deal to the south, and Dover itself to the north. Every garden here gets salt wind and chalk soil in different measures depending on how exposed it is.

St Margaret's at Cliffe and St Margaret's Bay

The village itself sits back from the cliff edge around the green and the High Street, with St Margaret's Bay down the hill by the shore. Gardens on the village side get some shelter from hedgerows and older planting; anything within a few hundred metres of the cliff edge or down at Bay level takes the full force of Channel gales. Leylandii and Lonicera nitida are common here precisely because they tolerate salt wind better than most alternatives, though they still need regular attention to stay dense against it.

Kingsdown and Ringwould

South along the coast towards Deal. Kingsdown sits right on the shingle with the same exposure problems as St Margaret's Bay; Ringwould is a little further inland and gets some shelter from the rise of ground behind it, though it still catches the prevailing south-westerlies coming off the Channel.

Walmer and Deal

The seafront and the streets running back from it. Walmer's older gardens, close to Walmer Castle, often have long-established boundary hedges that need careful, less-drastic reduction rather than a hard cut back. Deal proper, a little further north, has the same coastal exposure with a slightly more sheltered town centre.

Dover

The port town itself, CT16 and CT17. Terraced streets on the hill up from the harbour have small front gardens, mostly privet and leylandii; the newer estates further out towards Whitfield have larger plots and more conifer boundary hedging.
